Science-- Seeing sound waves

We have been learning about the properties of sound.  There were so many fun experiments to try!  This is a website that helps you understand what sound would look like if you could see it.  We are using this website as review for the concepts we have already learned.
Have fun exploring!

Learning About Explorers

Grade four and five are learning about explorers of North America.  They will be researching their explorers by using this wonderful site!  The notes and details are well laid out and later they will make them into their own report!  Have fun learning!

Exploring About Sound

As we begin our new unit on sound, we've looked into questions like "Why did God create sound?" and "What kind of sounds can we hear?"  We've determined a number of reasons for God's wonderful creation: the ability to communicate, the enjoyment of nature, and the precautions we can make for safety.  There are dozens of reasons sound is a benefit to humanity.

In this website, there are a number of videos discussing how people use sounds in their jobs and in every day life.

In the second website, there are some "listening" sound games that show how well we have to listen in order to hear some of the sounds around us.

These websites are just a glimpse of what we are learning.  We sure are enjoying the experiments in class!

Things on a Ship

We are beginning our Social Studies unit on Explorers and are quite excited to "explore" ourselves!  Before we begin our reports, we've decided to do some background investigating as to what the explorers might have used for navigation and sailing.  The http://www.cccoe.net/lifeatsea/student/shipparts.htm website has a great layout of what the ship looks like and it defines the different parts of the ship with what they are used for.  Take a look!

Word Choice Presentation

Word Choice -- Our new writing tool of the month.  We are learning how to use a wide range of vocabulary.  To begin this unit, we should look into how many words we can use to describe one object.  We did this in class and then we looked into how to present our work.  The website  www.wordle.net works well to publish our work!  Take a look!

What is weather?

We've been learning about measuring weather with different instruments, but we haven't talked a lot about how the weather may affect the way we live.  Here is a website that talks about how weather affects the way people live.  The categories are housing, sports, and clothing.

Enjoy! http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/whatisweather/weatherandpeople/index.shtml

Quadrilateral Shape Review

Here is a website that goes through the quadrilateral shapes we have been learning with their properities.  Careful: the word congruent means "equal sides".

Have fun!

Using Manipulatives Online for Division

Recently we worked with place value blocks for a math lesson on division.  However, as we entered into the higher level questions, we ran out of blocks to show our work!  Using this website online helps show the block theory of division and how a large number is broken up into groups.
I really like how this website uses a word problem first.  Then step by step asks for the numbers to be entered when figuring out the solution.
Enjoy!

Making Flipbooks with Technology

In Grade Four, students are asked to put together a flipbook.  A flipbook uses art by displaying action.  The trick to showing an action is to only move one part of the body at a time.  This way when the pages move quickly, it looks like the action is actually taking place.  Instead of using a ton of paper, or a ton of sticky notes, students can make their own flipbook online.

Patterns in Bold Colours

Take a look at this author's work!  His name is Romero Britto.  He is a young artist who lives in the United States.  Romero uses patterns with bright colours to show off the different lines in his picture.

Learning about the Water Cycle

In Science class we are beginning to learn about the water cycle.  We have been using the following sites to help us understand some of the key concepts.

Water Cycle Game: http://apps.southeastwater.com.au/games/se-water-cycle.swf

Also...for teacher's interests, there is a site online that has numerous activities and experiments for the students to do.  We did the watercycle game with the different stages.  It was pretty neat!  Here is the site: http://scifiles.larc.nasa.gov/docs/guides/Water_Cycle.pdf
